The Stichting Zeilvaart Warmond
organizes contests and events with historical, still sailing freight ships (“kleine bruine vloot”). These ships were used to transport commodities like flower bulbs, sand and vegetables though the shallow ditches of the Westland and the Bollenstreek.
The Westlanders, Kagenaars, Tjalken, Aken and such are often over 80 years old, but are still able to make for an interesting race amongst each other.
A number of these ships are still left, and fortunately there are still enthusiastic people working on restoring and maintaining them. Today, only forty vessels are still sailing. Fifteen of those regularly compete in events organized by the Stichting Zeilvaart Warmond. Amongst these vessels is only one Zandaak and two or three Kagenaars.
The Turfrace of September 21st, 22th and 23th was shown live using our GPS tracking system.
